Andrew Rowland is a regular around here, but usually on live-action films like The Godfather and It’s a Wonderful Life, so a Disney Villains pairing is something different for him. Ursula and Jafar were part of the Disney Renaissance in the late 80s and early 90s. The Little Mermaid in 1989 was the film that pulled the studio out of its slump, and Aladdin in 1992 cemented the hot streak, with each film owing a huge debt to its villain. Ursula, famously modeled in part on the drag legend Divine and voiced to perfection by Pat Carroll. Jafar, played by voice actor Jonathan Freeman loved the role so much he later played him on Broadway. Rowland depicts both as towering villains: Ursula holding Ariel’s fate over her polyp garden with Flotsam and Jetsam circling, and Jafar with Iago on his shoulder while his final cosmic-genie form crackles in the sky over Agrabah.
