New week, and this one hits hard. The Raid finally gets its first print on the site, fifteen years after Gareth Evans crammed an apartment block full of the best fight choreography ever put on film. Made for around a million bucks, it tore up the festival circuit, made Iko Uwais a star, and put Pencak silat on the map for western audiences. Action movies are still chasing it. Dave Merrell is the right guy for it too. He’s been on a martial arts run at Bottleneck after Kung Fu Hustle back in January, and his painted style suits the grime of this movie. The piece pulls from the film’s turning point, Rama cornered in the hallway with the words you fight or die scrawled on the wall behind him.
